In 1871 Annie, as she was known, was living with her parents George and Hester, plus 4 siblings in Kingswood where her father was a Woollen Cloth Weaver, as was her mother Hester. [2]
In 1881 Annie married William Hancock. Their marriage was registered in Dursley. [3]
In 1891 William and Annie lived in Wotton under Edge where William was an umbrella marker and Annie was an Elastic Weaver. The couple had a son, Albert Edward and they had a general domestic servant Emma R Niblett and a lodger, widower Albert J Cox. [4]
William and Annie's marriage seemingly didn't last - perhaps it had already broken down and they were with their respective new partners. Annie went to live in Bristol with boarder Albert Cox, where she had more children. William got together with their former domestic servant Emma Niblett and moved to Abertillery and they also had more children.
In 1901 Annie (listed as Annie Cox, married), along with children Rowland, Annie and Hester had moved to Bristol and Annie was a domestic servant. [5]
Annies younger children, Annie Louisa, Hester Lydia and Doris May were registered with the middle name Cox. In 1911 she had again taken the surname Hancock as had her children. They were boarding with Albert James Cox, a 'Head Tester' in a Cotton Works. The 2 youngest children, Hester and Doris were born in Bristol and couldn't possibly be the children of her husband William. It's possible that Albert fathered all the children with the middle name Cox (it's possible he fathered all her children). [6] Doris May named Albert as her father on her marriage certificate - her brother Rowland was a witness. [7]
Annie Elizabeth died aged 68 in 1931. Her death was registered in Bristol. [8]
Notes
Strangely, in the 1911 census, although Annie claimed to have been married since around 1881 she also claimed to have had 6 children of whom 3 had passed away. Given she was living with 4 children, perhaps it casts doubt on whether she was actually everyone's mother. Perhaps it is just mistranscribed.
Possible 9 children of Annie Elizabeth (only 2 have been found who died young). Hester, Rowland and Julia are names from her family - mother and siblings.
