Biography
George Willard Coy (born November 13, 1836, in Freedom, Maine, died January 15 or 23, 1915 in Revere, Massachusetts[1]) was an American mechanic, inventor and entrepreneur. He ran the first commercial telephone exchange in 1878 and was involved in the production of the first telephone directory.
He was a first sergeant in Company D, 56th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was wounded in the left shoulder at Petersburg on 17 Jun 1864. He mustered out on 5 Jun 1865. .[1]
George's wife Malina received his pension forllowing his death on 23 Jan 1915.[2]
He died 23 January 1915, at age 78 and was buried in MIlford Cemetery, New Haven County, Connecticut.:[3]
