Mary Jane Crabtree was born in Appalachia, in Tennessee.

Mary Jane Crabtree was born on August 16, 1852, daughter of Hiram Crabtree (1818–1898) and Minerva Jane Delk (1820–1898).

Mary (18) married Pleasant Henry Leffew (30) (born on July 6, 1840 in Kingston, Roane County, Tennessee, United States; son of Pleasant Henry Leffew I and Elenor Nelly (Rook) Leffew) on November 13, 1870 in Fentress, Tennessee.

In the 1860 census Mary (age 8) was at 8th District, Fentress, Tennessee, United States.^[1] Hiram Crabtree 42, Manerva Crabtree 38, Thomas Crabtree 19, Anza Crabtree 18, Nancy Crabtree 15, Mary J E Crabtree 8, Winnie Crabtree 6.
