Obituary

Crabtree, Benjamin B. age 72, of Edina, passed away peacefully at home on September 28th after a long bout with cancer. Born May 17, 1942 to Donald and Edna Crabtree of Ellendale, ND. After graduating from Ellendale High School, Ben attended Harvard for two years before finishing college at the University of North Dakota. After graduation in 1965, he married Susan Larson of Rugby, ND, and the two of them moved to Edina, where they raised their three sons. Ben's career in investment analysis and research spanned nearly 50 years. After starting in the fiduciary money management business for US Bank predecessor, First Bank System, he later joined the Minneapolis-based regional brokerage firm Dain Bosworth as a research analyst and was there for over 20 years. His keen insights and clear writing style kept clients informed on business trends in several industries and in particular, regional and community banking in the upper Midwest. He was active in the recapitalization of several thrifts that survived the savings and loan crisis in the early 1990s. In 1994, the American Banker newspaper named him the Community Banking Analyst of the Year. After the acquisition of Dain Bosworth, Ben enjoyed similar investment analysis roles at George K. Baum Co., Advantus Capital Management, Piper, Stifel Nicolaus, and lastly at Oak Ridge Financial, where he continued to be an enthusiastic member of the team until his health prevented him from continuing. Ben held the respected Chartered Financial Analyst designation and was a long time member of the Twin Cities Society of Security Analysts. Survived by his loving wife Sue of 49 years and their three sons: Mike, his wife Charlotte, and their daughters Jane and Sally; Jon, his wife Krisha, and their son Logan; and Pete, his wife Susie, and their son Theo; his sister Susan and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family. Ben is also survived by a large and treasured community of friends, many of them gained through his and Sue's long association with Edina Community Lutheran Church. Ben shared his love of music with the ECLC family, playing guitar during services and for the small children's Sunday school sing-a-longs for over 30 years. He enjoyed many other hobbies, including photography, hunting & fishing, cooking, and travel. In the last decade of his life, Ben found his true calling - the role of Grandpa. He embraced this part of his life with an en-thusiasm and joy that was clear to all. Ben had friends from all walks of life - college, church, business, music, neighbors. He appreciated and cherished them all. Even more than his many friends, he loved his family - Sue, his sons, his daughters-in-law, and his precious grandchildren. He will be desperately missed and lovingly remembered. There will be a visitation from 4:00-7:00 pm Sunday, October 5th at Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel, West 50th St. and Vernon Ave at Hwy 100. Memorial Service 2:00 pm Monday, October 6th at Edina Community Lutheran Church, 4113 West 54th St. Edina. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Edina Community Lutheran Church. www.Washburn-McReavy.com Edina Chapel 952-920-3996[1]
