Biography

Mrs. Sarah Hawkins, 85-year old life long resident of Monroe County, succumbed to a heart ailment at her home in Sanders Wednesday night after an illness of nine months.

The daughter of John and Elizabeth Cracraft, deceased, both of whom were born in Monroe County in the last century, Mrs. Hawkins had lived in Sanders only during the past year. She had spent the rest of her life in Chapel Hill and Bloomington. In addition to other relatives, she leaves 33 grandchildren, 57 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild, which is only two weeks old. She was a member of the M.E. church at Chapel Hill.

Mrs. Hawkins' first husband, James Tate, died many years ago, while her second husband, James Hawkins, passed away 19 years ago. Her son, Talmadge Hawkins, for many years a prominent local groceryman and civic leader, died Dec, 9, 1938, exactly three years ago.

The survivors include four daughters, Millie Tate, Madison; Mrs. Mary East, Bloomington; Mrs. Pauline Prince, rural route four, and Mrs. Lillie Clark, rural route four; one son Edgar Tate, rural route three; a brother, George Cracraft, Chapel Hill, and a sister, Mrs. Nancy Jane Allen, Bloomington.

The funeral will be conducted at 10:30 o'clock Saturday morning at the Sanders church by the Rev. Lloyd Livingston. Burial will be at Chapel Hill.

The body will remain at the Day Mortuary until the funeral hour."
