Additional Data
Mr. J. J. Craig.
After an illness of some 9 months' duration, there passed to the Great Beyond on Saturday last, Mr. John Joseph Craig, a resident of the Hastings district for 75 years. In this long span, deceased had become well and favorably known by a large circle. A native of Maitland, at the age of three years, the subject of this notice came to the Hastings River with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. George Craig, who were the first settlers on Rawdon Island. It is reported that in those early days Rawdon Island was more like a swamp than the rich flats now in evidence, and that a fire lit during a very dry period smouldered for three years. In due time the late Mr. Craig married a Miss Kidd, of Taree, and then carried on a black-smithing business at Wingham. After a few years the couple returned to the Hastings, road contracting and farming pursuits occupying attention. During the construction of the training wall at Port Macquarie deceased (with Mr. J. Pearce, of Port Macquarie) was "galloper" — in charge of the horses used in giving momentum to the trucks for tipping. The late Mr. Craig was the last of the older Craig family of five, and is survived by Mrs. Craig and a family of four sons and one daughter, viz., Messrs Harold (Morton's Creek), Jack (Bellangry), James (Dorrigo), and Douglas (Beechwood); and Mrs. P. McGovern (Stewart's River). The body was laid to rest in the Roman Catholic portion of Beechwood Cemetery on Sunday, Rev. Father O'Mahoney officiating. — "Shire Gazette." '
