His family fled from Scotland to Tyrone in Ulster, Ireland to escape persecution (as Presbyterians). Four of William Craig's sons and several daughters emigrated to America: Thomas, Daniel, James, William, Sarah, Margaret and Jane. Brief Historical Account of the William Craig Family.[1]
Daniel Craig lived to an advanced age and died one month before the Declaration of Independence was signed. He had been totally blind for several years. His sons, Thomas and John, were among the most prominent in the defense of their country in the War of the Revolution. Thomas was commissioned a Captain on 23 October 1776 and commanded a company in Colonel William Baxter's Regiment of the Flying Camp in the Battle of Fort Washington in November 1776. Thomas served through the entire war and at its close was commissioner of purchases for the Army with the rank of Colonel.
His cousins, Thomas and John Craig of Northampton, were also among the most prominent of Pennsylvania's soldiers in the Revolution. The former, John Craig, retired with the rank of General. The other children of Daniel Craig were: William, evidently a "ne'er do well" pensioned by his father; and five daughters.
His second daughter, Sarah Craig was the great-great-grandmother of president Theodore Roosevelt. She seems to have spent at least a portion of her childhood days with her uncle and aunt, John and Margaret Gray, as evidenced by the will of John Gray in 1749. Whether she married with the consent of her parents or her Aunt Margaret Gray is not disclosed. She married John Barnhill in 1752 of New Britain Township, a son of Robert Barnhill, a Scotch-Irish immigrant
(Adams County Historical Society, The Miller family in Pennsylvania - June 1995).
Secondly, Daniel (64) married Margaret Stewart (50) (born about 1712 in Berks, Pennsylvania) on January 15, 1763 in Pennsylvania, British Colonial America.[2][3]
