A copy of marriage contract between Thomas Fairchild of Stratford, merchant, and Catherine Craig, a sister of Elizabeth Whiting, widow of London, Executed in England December 22, 1662.
The ceremony was performed in St. Stephen's Church in London. That church has long since burned and was never rebuilt [1] [2]
A footnote in the Col. Rec. Vol. 2 page 199, gives the following facts:
"A copy of the marriage contract between Thomas Fairchild, of Stratford, merchant, and Katherine Cragg, a sister of Elizabeth Whiting, widow, of London, (executed in England, 22nd Dec. 1662) is in Priv. Controv. Vol. I. Doc. 10. Mr. Fairchild binds himself to convey to the said Katherine, a life estate in his lands at Stratford, or, in case of his death before his arrival in N. England, to cause to be paid to the said Katherine, the sum of 200 pounds out of his estate
He died December 14, 1670 without fulfilling the agreement, and the matter was brought before the General Court; that body after examining the contract ordered it paid, but directed that shee will secure meet portions out of the same to the sayd three children, as shee may be able.
Thomas had seven children by his first wife, and three by his second, but in his will dated one week before his death, only his children by the first wife are mentioned.[3] It appears that after the death of his first wife, he returned to England where the contract above referred to was executed, and where no doubt his second marriage was performed."[4]
The contract was carried out and settled after Thomas' death by the General Court, ordering the money be paid. The estate was valued at 350 pounds. The Stratford land records give the settlement.
On May 22,1677 Mrs. Katherine Judson, by virtue of a contract with Mr. Thomas Fairchild, late deceased, by the consent of the General Court of Connecticut, "hath a dwelling house, barn, orchard and homelot of 2 acres".
