Obtained his birth record in July 2001. It was issued prior to the new records system started in 1855, hence is simply a hand-written entry in the Old Parish Records, but confirms Alex's birth on August 1st 1854 in Beith to David Craig and Agnes Marshall. The record reads "Craig Alexander, lawful son to David Craig, Currier in Town and Agnes Marshall, spouses, born 1st August 1854."
The 1861 census lists Alexander and his parents and siblings living at 132 Church Road, Beith, Ayrshire. Alexander is listed as aged 9, occupation scholar, born in Beith, Ayrshire. Also listed are mother Agnes, 32 years old; husband David, 35 years old, occupation Agricultural Labourer, born in Beith; brother William, scholar, aged 9; brother John, aged 4; sister Janet, aged 2. All the children are confirmed to be born in Beith.
The 1871 census lists Alexander living with his parents and siblings at 44 New House, Beith, Ayrshire. Alexander is listed as aged 16, occupation Railway Clerk, born in Beith, Ayrshire. Also listed are father David, 44 years old, a Currier by trade, born in Beith; mother Agnes, aged 45, born in Galston, Ayrshire; brother John aged 14; sister Janet, scholar, aged 12; and brother Robert, scholar, aged 8.
The only family record or recollection of Alexander is from George Craigs 1970 family history, which states: Alex was employed by the Railway, died of pneumonia or possibly tuberculosis at the age of 18.
Obtained his death certificate in July 2001, which confirms his parents names, his father David's occupation, and the fact that his father David was present at his death. Extremely sad. He died aged 18, occupation Railway Clerk, marital status single, at a quarter past midnight on November 14th, 1872, at Wardrop Street, Beith. He died of Phthisis Pulmonalis (commonly known as Tuberculosis or Consumption) after suffering for 4 months.
November 2001 - North Ayrshire Council Cemeteries Office confirm they have found grave records for Craigs, including Alex, in Plot 89 of the Old Head Street Churchyard, Beith.
November 2002 - finally got a copy of the burial record for Plot 89. Alex was interred on 16th November 1872, and is buried with his parents, 2 uncles, aunt, and paternal grandfather. A photocopy of the Plot 89 burial page from the North Ayrshire Council Cemeteries Office record is attached.
