Notes

Note N315Margaret was born in Beith in 1820. No record of her birth has been found on LDS or SRO records. However, census and other data confirm her year and place of birth.
The 1841 census finds Margaret and her family living at Gateside, Beith. The census simply lists Margaret as aged 15 (+/- 5 as normal for the 1841 census). Parents Robert (a Grocer, aged 50 +/-5) and Margaret aged 40 (+/-5) are also present, plus siblings Robert 15 (+/-5) and Jean (11). All were born in Beith. No occupations are listed for anyone other that father Robert.
The 1871 census finds Margaret living with her father, brother, sister and nephew at 6 Main Street, Kilbirnie, Ayrshire. She is described as aged 49, unmarried, no occupation listed, born in Beith. Also in the house are father Robert, Head of Household, aged 84, spirits dealer and a widower; brother Robert, aged 45, widower, occupation Pit Head Man, born in Beith; sister Ann, aged 47, unmarried, no occupation listed, born in Beith; and nephew (Robert's son) James, aged 5, born in Kilbirnie.
The 1881 census finds Margaret living with her brother Robert and his son James at Cochrane Street, Kilbirnie. Margaret is listed as head of the household, and is described as unmarried and aged 55.
Robert, aged 52, is described as a general labourer. James is described as aged 15, scholar, and nephew to Margaret. The census confirms that Margaret and Robert were born in Beith, and James in Kilbirnie.
Margaret died on 16th December 1887 just 9 days before her brother Robert also died. Her inventory and will have been found and are reproduced below. She was a reasonably wealthy woman. The Will confirms that she remained unmarried throughout her life and never had any children.
