The 1861 census lists William and his parents and siblings living at 132 Church Road, Beith, Ayrshire. William is listed as aged 9, occupation scholar, born in Beith, Ayrshire. Also listed are mother Agnes, 32 years old; husband David, 35 years old, occupation Agricultural Labourer, born in Beith; brother Alexander, scholar, aged 7; brother John, aged 4; sister Janet, aged 2. All the children are confirmed to be born in Beith.

William and family are found on the 1881 census living at 22 Raglan Street, Glasgow, Lanark. William is described as head of household, occupation Police Constable, aged 29, born in Beith, Ayrshire, Scotland. Also present are wife Margaret, aged 26, born in Dalquhairn, Ayr, (adopted) son John, aged 4, born in Dunoon, and son David, aged 2, born in Glasgow.
William died on 10 April 1884, aged only 31 years. He died at 19 Raglan Street, Glasgow. His death certificate confirms that he was a Police Constable, that he was married to Maggie Copland, and that his parents were David Craig, currier (foreman) and Agnes Marshall, both still alive. His wife Margaret was with him when he died. He died of Phthisis Pulmonalis, which he'd had for three months. In plainer terms, this is "consumption of the lungs; strictly applied to the tuberculous variety". [Cleaveland1886]. In other words, William died of TB.
According to son David's marriage certificate dated 25 September 1902, William was deceased. His occupation is described as Mason.
