Biography

If there is anything you can contribute to Henry's biography, you are more than welcome to message me or leave a comment.

Born about 1815 possibly in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, USA.

Note: There is not much I could find out about Henry's parents and childhood yet. He is probably born in or near Dayton, Ohio[1] and later moves to Illinois. His father is from Kentucky, while his mother is an English immigrant.[2]

14 Aug 1838 When he is about 23 years old Henry marries Mary Venard in McDonough County, Illinois.[3]

Their daughter Sarah is born about a year later in 1839.

1840 This might be Henry's family listed in McDonough County, Illinois.[4]

  • born 1840-1835: 1 female (Sarah *1839)
  • born 1835-1830: 0
  • born 1830-1825: 0
  • born 1825-1820: 0
  • born 1820-1810: 1 female (Mary *1816), 1 male (Henry *1815)

Note: I can't be 100% sure that this is the right Henry Craig and family, but the ages of the family members fit.

At least four more children are born to Henry and Mary over the next years: Eliza Jane (*~1844), David Thomas (*21 Dec 1845), Vashti (*~1848) and Lucinda (*Jul 1850).

24 Sep 1850 Henry, his wife Mary and their five children are listed in Brooklyn, Schuyler County, Illinois.[5]

  • Craig Henry V. (34 years, male, farmer, 1000$ real estate, born in Ohio)
  • Craig Mary (33 years, female, born in Kentucky)
  • Craig Sarah (11 years, female, attends school, born in Illinois)
  • Craig Eliza J. (6 years, female, born in Illinois)
  • Craig David T. (4 years, male, born in Illinois)
  • Craig Vashti (2 years, female, born in Illinois)
  • Craig Lucinda (2 months, female, born in Illinois)

Henry's wife dies sometime in the early 1850ies.[6]

1855 Henry is listed as head of a household of 5 still living in Brooklyn Township, Schuyler, Illinois.[7]

Henry marries Anna Redmond probably about 1856 and moves to Liberty Township, Schuyler County, Missouri with her and his children.[8]

His oldest daughter Sarah marries Daniel Boon Readman (found different spellings Readman, Redman, Redmond) in Jun 1856. (Wondering if there is a relation between Anna and Daniel.) Henry's daughter Eliza marries Isaac Clifford Ayer sometime before 1860.

On Aug 25 1857 Henry and Anna's daughter Luticia is born and on Dec 11 1859 their son Joseph.

16 Jun 1860 Henry is listed with his second wife Anna and five of his children owning a farm in Liberty, Schuyler, Missouri.[9]

  • Craig Henry (45 years, male, farmer,1500$ real estate, 600$ personal estate, born in Ohio)
  • Craig Anna (24 years, female, born in Illinois)
  • Craig David (14 years, male, attends school, born in Illinois)

  • Craig Lucinda (9 years, female, attends school, born in Illinois)

  • Craig Joseph (6 months, male, born in Missouri)

Over the next years Henry and Anna have at least 3 more children together: James (*1862), John (*~1865) and Ida (*~1869).

Henry's oldest son David marries Mary Ann Cowell in 1865. The couple receives some land for farming next to Henry's property.

3 Jun 1870 Henry's family is still listed living on the farm in Liberty Township, Schuyler, Missouri.[10]

  • Craig Henry V. (56 years, male, white, farmer, 3000$ real estate, 1325$ personal estate, born in Ohio, mother of foreign birth)

  • Craig James (8 years, male, white, born in Missouri)
  • Craig John (5 years, male, white, born in Missouri)
  • Craig Ida (1 year, female, white, born in Missouri)

Henry's daughter Luticia marries John Everly in 1872. The couple remains in Schuyler County. In 1875 Vashti marries Levi Foglesong and moves to Iowa with him. Lucinda probably also married sometime during the 1870ies, but I couldn't find any details yet.

On 15 Sep 1876 Henry's youngest daughter Lillie is born. I believe there were two more children born during this decade, but they died at an early age. Little John and Ida probably also died around this time.[11]

Henry and Anna's son James moves to Colorado to work as a clerk.

15 Jun 1880 Henry is listed with his wife and two of their children still in Liberty, Schuyler, Missouri.[12]

  • Craig Henry V. (64 years, white, male, married, farmer, born in Ohio, father born in Kentucky, mother born in England)

  • Craig Joseph (19 years, white, male, single, works on farm, born in Missouri, father born in Ohio, mother born in Illinois)
  • Craig Lily Bell (3 years, white, female, born in Missouri, father born in Ohio, mother born in Illinois)

Henry and Anna's son James returns from Colorado and marries Lucy White in 1893. The couple remains in Schuyler County. Henry's son Joseph marries Sarah Brown in 1885 and moves to Lancaster City. Henry's daughter Lillie marries John Allen Brown also in 1885. The couple first moves to Carroll County and later also settles in Lancaster City.

Died after 1880 possible in Missouri, USA.

Note: No records found for Henry after 1880. Anna is listed as widowed in 1900.
