John was born in Sept 1774 in Franklin County, Virginia to parents John Craghead Sr and Jane Elizabeth Leodicea Maxey.

Marriage: He married Sarah Jane “Sally” Powell and they had thirteen children together.

  1. Virginia (Jane) Craghead, born in 1794 in Franklin County, Va. and married Robert Wesley Mattox March 14, 1814 (marriage bond). John Mattox is listed as Surety.
  2. Catherine T. Craghead, born 1796 in Franklin County, Va. and married Dr. John Spencer James January 17, 1815 (marriage bond).
  3. Frances (Fannie) Craghead, born in 1796 in Franklin County, Va. and married Thomas Mitchell about 1815.
  4. Nancy Craghead, born 1801(2) in Franklin County, Va. and married her double cousin William Craighead May 13, 1822. The marriage bond is recorded in Franklin Co., VA May 13, 1822 with Townsend Craighead as Surety.
  5. Robert (Robin) Craghead, born about 1802 in Franklin County, Va. and married Catherine _________ .
  6. Townsend Craighead, born in 1803 in Franklin Co., Va. and married Sarah Jane Bernard. Their marriage bond is recorded in Franklin Co., VA January 24, 1824 with Westley Mattox as Surety. Townsend died November 7, 1899.
  7. John (Unity) Craghead III, born September 21, 1805 and married Julia Ann B. Smith December 21, 1830.
  8. Theodosia (Docia) Craghead, born September 28, 1807 in Franklin Co., Va. and married Charles Thomas Holland. Their marriage bond was recorded at Franklin Co., VA February 26, 1827 with John Craghead listed as Surety.
  9. Charles Powell Craghead, born July 13, 1810 and died January 7, 1886 in Callaway Co., Mo. Charles married Elvira Ann Saunders March 6, 1832. Elvira was the daughter of Littleberry Saunders. Franklin Co. records show that Charles received $900.00 from Robert Craghead for 219 acreas of land March 4, 1849.
  10. Elizabeth (Libby) Craghead, born about 1811 and married John “Silas” Booth February 26, 1832. Charles P. Craghead was listed as Surety
  11. Emily Craghead, born about 1815 in Franklin Co., Va. and married John Morgan.
  12. Thomas Lodowick Craghead , born in 1819 and married Lucinda T. Baker October 14, 1846. He died at Point Lookout MD on September 26, 1864.

'Notations on John Craghead/Craighead Jr and wife, Sarah Jane “Sally” Powell:
“John Craghead Jr., born September 25, 1774 in Bedford Co., VA and died January 24, 1859 in Franklin Co., VA. John married Sally Powell January 2, 1794 (marriage bond) in Franklin Co., VA. Sally lived to be 102 years old. Sally was the daughter of Robert (or Edward) and _______ Tuggle Powell. John and Sally lived to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary and both are buried on their farm near Scruggs Virginia. John had cancer of the eye, but do not know if that was the cause of his death. John was listed on the tax list of Franklin county of 1800 as having 1 free tithable, 3 horses and 1 slave over 16 years of age. John’s name was also mentioned in his fathers Will giving him land on which he was living on the Staunton River (Roanoke) and adjoining land he purchased from Simmons. He was also executor of his father’s Will along with his brother Robert. John owned 550 acres of land for some period of Time. Their home was about a mile from the Staunton River and was built during slavery time from brick made on the farm. John owned several slaves. After John and Sally’s death, legal suit to settle the estate was held in Bedford County Circuit Court. Information about this settlement can be found in file # 2267. A copy of an auction sale from this file dated September 17, 1877 is attached. 'Notations on Isaiah Walter Craighead and Robert Maxey Craighead:
“ CRAIGHEAD, Robert M. and Isaiah Craighead were brothers, and they had a nephew named John who was a son of their brother, John, of VA. Robert M. married NANCY POWELL and they had William, Solomon, Robert, Jr., Jonathan, Stephen, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, and Nancy. They settled in Callaway Co. in 1819. Isaiah married FEMININE ROBINSON, and settled in Callaway Co. in 1830. His children were John R., George, James, Isaiah W., William A. B., Jane, and Nancy )P. John R. married SARAH HALL [Hale], and they had Isaiah O., John W., Mark A., James, Patrick H., Caroline, and Lucy J.
