Biography

James Crandall Junior was a Rhode Islander.

James Crandall, Junior, son of Peter Crandall and Mary Burdick, was born in 1730 in Westerly, Kings county, Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, [1] or in Newport, Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. [2]

"This James was referred to as Junior, which does not necessarily mean that his father was James, but it distinguished him from an older James. This data was confirmed by A.E. Crandall and E.G. Davis." [3]

James Crandall, of Westerly, and Sarah Clarke, of Newport, were married on 17 January 1754 in Newport by Rev. Nicholas Eyres. [4] James and Sarah had the following known children together:

  1. Lydia (Crandall) Saunders, 1754–1839;
  2. Clarke Crandall, 1756–1799;
  3. Benedict Crandall, 1758–1814; [5]
  4. Anne (Crandall) Green, 1761–;
  5. James Crandall, 1763–1845; [6]
  6. Ruth Crandall, 1766–;
  7. Paul Crandall, 1768–;
  8. Peter Crandall, 1768-;
  9. Henry Gardner Crandall, 1770–1841;
  10. Mary (Crandall) Rathbun, 1773–1846. [7]

According to Find-A-Grave James Crandall died in 1792 at Westerly, Washington county, Rhode Island. However, James Crandall drew up his Last Will & Testament on 1 March 1797 at Westerly; two of the three Witnesses to the signing of James' Will appeared in court at Westerly after James' death, on 24 April 1797, to testify that they saw him sign the Will; consequently the Will was declared proved on 26 April 1797 at Westerly. Thus, James must have died between 1 March 1797, when James drew up his Will, and 24 April 1797l, when the witnesses to his Will appeared in Court. [8]

James Crandall was buried at Thier Crandall Ground in Westerly. [9]

Geopolitical-Historical Note on James' County of Birth & Death

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

Besides John Cortland Crandall's publication, are there any sources which show James Crandall Jr. as the son of Peter and Mary? The only children of Peter and Mary that appear in a transcribed copy of the Westerly town records are Peter, Amos, Samuel, Edward, and Mary.

James Crandall is my 6th Great-grandfather. James could have been inadvertently left out of the transcribed copy of the Westerly birth records: this is known to happen sometimes. Or, for some reason other than his not being Peter and Mary's son, he might be missing in the original (e.g., record entry never made, torn page). Could you provide us with the record in question? For now, it seems safer to accept the information provided by Elder John Crandall of Rhode Island and his descendants as true, until proven otherwise. However, should the other manager of this profile ever wish to unlink the parents, that would be all right with me. The father Peter Crandall has a messy profile with contrasting "sources": it would be nice, were someone to help improve it, adding primary sources, if any can be found.
