When Wilhelmina Helena Crapo was born on April 6, 1849, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, her father, Henry (former governor of Michigan), was 44, and her mother, Mary (nee Slocum), was 43. She had one brother and eight sisters.
On March 15, 1876, she married Charles Warren Clifford, a lawyer, age 31, in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts. Wilhelmina was a sister of his partner, Hon. William W. Crapo.[1]

Wilhelmina and her husband were childless, and Charles' only child (by his first wife), died at birth.
