Captain Alexander Crafford was born September 28, 1750, in Cumberland county, Pennsylvania. At the time of the American Revolutionary War, Alexander was residing in the Camden District of South Carolina. Alexander served as an officer, first as a Lieutenant and then as a Captain. Alexander is honored for his military service by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution as DAR Ancestor #A027567. DAR records indicate that Captain Crawford (see notes) died in February, 1839, in Maury County, Tennessee and that his wife's name is Elizabeth Craighead. Applications for membership in the Society of the DAR have been made by the descendants of his sons, Alexander Crawford, II, who married Easter Alexander; George Crawford, who married Priscilla Alexander; James Thomas Crawford, who married Jane Brown Porter; and of his daughter Elizabeth Crawford, who married James Stockard. Alexander Crafford's DAR records are found under the spelling of the surname as "Crawford," with the disclaimer, "As such, the DAR assigns a single standard surname that covers variant spellings of similar surnames. While the surname may appear incorrect, this does not mean it is in error. This spelling system ensures that patriots are not established under more than one spelling."
