Biography

The Crawford family of Pike/Walthall Counties, Miss., descend from a William Crawford who made a deed of gift to his wife Martha and her children Thomas, Nelly, Patience, Selete, and Jesse on 3/9/1796 in Effingham Co., Ga. (Effingham Co., Ga., Deed Bk. A-B, p. 274). This William was apparently dead prior to 7/3/1798 when a Mrs. Martha Crawford md. Richard Touchstone in Effingham.

In a Bible owned by Mrs. Bessie Waters of Sylvania, Ga., in 1953, the following list of children was found:

1) Sarah Crawford b. 11/14/1775

2) Thomas Crawford b. 2/18/1784

3) Elender Crawford b. 5/1/1786

4) Patience Crawford b. 9/6/1782

5) Selete Crawford b. 10/19/1781

6) Jesse Crawford b. 2/4/1795

Of these children, Patience possibly married Luke Wilson of Effingham on 3/8/1806, and Eleanor married Benjamin Alexander in Effingham on 2/11/1808. Jesse Crawford migrated on to Marion Co., Miss., ca. 1820 where he later married.

William Crawford, who d. ca 1796/7, was a resident of Effingham as early as 1787 when he obtained a land grant. It is believed that he was the son of an older Thomas Crawford -- possibly the Thomas Crawford who obtained a 100-acre land grant in St. Matthews Parish, GA. (later called Effingham). This Thomas petitioned for and obtained his grant ca. 1770/1771. About the same time a Carter Crawford obtained a grant in the same general area and claimed to be formerly of South Carolina. If there was a kinship between these Crawfords, both possibly came into Georgia via South Carolina, although it is claimed that Thomas Crawford hailed from Virginia.^[1]
