He was the son of Alexander Crawford and Elizabeth McClure. William married Margaret Henderson, daughter of William Henderson and Susannah Gillespie. William Crawford served in the Revolution. Both are buried on Dry Branch, Highland County, Virginia. Their graves are unmarked.

They have 8 Children together;

• Robert Crawford-married Sarah Stephenson. They migrated to Randolph County, West VA.
• Mary Crawford-married John Armstrong.
• James Crawford-married Mary Bridger in 1786. They migrated West.
• Viola, or Violet, Crawford-married Capt. David Gwin in Nov 11, 1790 in Augusta co, Virginia.
• Andrew Crawford-married (1).Elizabeth Stephenson, died in 1829; (2). ? Hyre of Upshur County, West Va. He migrated to Randolph co, W.Va 1800. He was one of the organizers of the Presbyterian church in Randolph County. (A History of Randolph County, DR. A. A. Bosworth, page327.) He had 10 children with Elizabeth Stephenson.
• Margaret Henderson Crawford-married Michael Cleek, died in 1834, son of Jacob Cleek and Christina Croddy.
• William Crawford, Jr.-married Martha Cooper in 1786.
• Agnes Crawford- married James Wiley. They had 4 children together.
