"Obituary: The Rock County Star-Herald, Luverne, Rock County, Minn, Thursday, April 17, 1947 J. S. Crawford, 83, County Pioneer, Dies Unexpectedly Funeral Held Tuesday For Well Known Beaver Creek Township Resident Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Beaver Creek Presbyterian church for J. Seth Crawford, 83, pioneer Rock county resident. Officiating at the services were Mr. Donald Iles, pastor of the Beaver Creek church, and the Rev. Orrin H. Moore, pastor of First Presbyterian church, of Luverne. Interment was in Beaver Valley cemetery, with Masonic committal rites and Commandery escort. Mr. Crawford died unexpectedly at his farm home west of Beaver Creek at 4:20 p.m. Friday, April 11. He had been in his usual good health that day, but suffered a heart attck, which was the cause of his death. James Seth Crawford was born in Freedom, Cattaraugus county, New York, May 16, 1863. He came with his parents, three brotheres and one sister to Luverne, Minn. in 1872 at nine years of age, where his father, the late Ira Crawford homesteaded. The family resided in Luverne until 1881 when they moved to Beaver Creek community and where Mr. Crawford resided until his passing. He was an active member of the Presbyterian church at Beaver Creek during the sixty-three years of residence here. He was and elder for fifty years and served the church as treasurer for forthy years. He was a memeber of Ben Franklin Lodge A.F. & A. M. of Luverne; amember of the Triune Chapter R.A.M. of Pipestone, a member of the Luvern Commandery of the Knights Templar and a member of Osman Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of St. Paul, Minn. He was one of the founders of the Beaver Creek Co-operative Elevator Company and served as secretary for many years and a director from its beginning until he died. He was united in marriage to Bessie Elizabeth Schenck of ERwin, S.D. June 17, 1914. To this union were born five sons: Harold Seth, Howard William, James Phillip, John Leslie and Francis Burton, all of them residing in the Beaver Creek community. His father, mother, four brothers and one sister preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, five sones, one grandson, James George Crawford, three brothers, William N., Ilwaco, Wash, James R.,Beaver Creek, Philip M., McAllan, Texas, and one sister, Mrs. Mary NOble of Pipestone. In his passing the Beaver Creek community lost one of its oldest pioneers and one who led a very active life. He has two wishes: First, that he could see his sons grawn and trought high school, second that he would be able to work to the very end. Both these wishes were fulfilled. "

According to my grandpa, Francis Burton Crawford (James' son), James Seth Crawford traveled to Minnesota in a covered wagon in 1871. He had a large farm in Beaver Creek, MN and five sons.
