Biography

Arthur Henry Crawford is born on July 16, 1882 in Ontario, Canada. His parents are Henry James Crawford (1857-1938) and Elizabeth Pearsall (1855-1938), both of whom were born in Canada West (Ontario). The family is in the 1901 census, on a farm in Oro Township and Henry (18) is shown with five younger siblings. The census labels the family English and shows the religion as Presbyterian.

On April 29, 1908 Arthur marries Mary Margaritte Jackson (1877-1966) and they have three children:

  • Arthur Clarke Crawford (1909-1975) + Edna J. O’Brien {1912-1995}
  • Violet Jean Crawford (1912-1947)
  • Laurine Crawford {1917-2009} + Crawford James Leigh {1916-1994}

Arthur and Mary live in Oro Township after the wedding. They can be found there in the 1911 census with their two-year old son. Arthur is described as a miller working at a grist mill. He may also farm the land he lives on because the 1921 census seems to indicate his occupation is a farmer. The 1921 census record shows them with two children: the 11-year old Clarke and the 3-year old Laurine.

It appears that the family continues to live on their farm in Oro Township although Arthur (Art) also works at a grist mill. It is not known if he has his own mill when he marries Mary. However, in 1927 he sells his farm and moves into Hawkestone. Hawkestone is a village on the shores of Lake Simcoe, about 22 kilometres south of Orillia. The Hawkestone Grist Mill burns to the ground in August, 1925. At the time, the owner is Robert Reid. But at some point – presumably after the mill is rebuilt – Arthur Crawford becomes the proprietor. Mary and Arthur spend the rest of their lives in Hawkestone.

Arthur dies on December 23, 1965 and Mary dies seven months later on July 24, 1966. They are buried in the Knox Presbyterian cemetery at the corner of the Old Barrie Road and the 9th line (northwest corner) along with a daughter (Violet J or Janet Violet) and a granddaughter (Marion E Leigh).
