Medina County Gazette 22 Sep 1882:
Died in Newburg, Ohio, on Tuesday, Sept 7, 1882, Mr. Thomas S. Crawford, age 44 years, 6 months and 18 days. Thomas S. Crawford was a member of the 103d O.V.I., Co., I, and was with that well known regiment in all its engagements, and was with Sherman on his great march from Atlanta to the Sea. Although he escaped the dangers of shot and shell, he never fully recovered from the effects of camp life. It was Tom's great delight to tell of the trials and incidents of his army life. At the close of the war he was honorably discharged, came home, married Caroline Elder and settled on a farm in Paulding Co., OH, but not being strong enough for this kind of labor, he removed to Seville and engaged in the grocery trade. This proved to much for his mind and in 1878 he became insane and was taken to the Asylum for treatment. He came back the next year much improved and his friends hoped that he was cured, but alas! His old malady appeared again and in July, 1881, he was again removed to the Asylum for treatment, but he gradually sank until death released him from great suffering. Thus has a wife lost a kind husband, three children and indulgent father, an aged father and mother a loving son and the country a noble defender and good citizen.
