Biography

from Find A Grave

Archibald, Robert, and John Crawford were early settlers to NW Mississippi, coming from Robeson Co, North Carolina in the latter half of the 1830s.

John's father was Archibald Crawford who died in late 1844. Archibald first married Nancy McMillan in Robeson, N. C. Soon after the birth of John, Nancy died. Archibald later married Margaret, and they had four daughters and two sons, Robert and young Archibald. Archibald Crawford and family were living on the Crawford farm close to this cemetery at the time of his death. Archibald's Probate documents are recorded in Desoto Co, MS Probate Records for 1845.

John married Mary Jane Sullivan in Robeson Co, N.C. on 11 Oct 1831. John arrived in MS around 1837 with wife and three young daughters, the youngest of which was born near LaGrange, TN where the family stopped for several month on their trip to Mississippi. After moving to MS, they had four sons.

John established this cemetery on his farm. Hickory Grove Academy and the original Hickory Grove Baptist Church were also located on his farm, farther north along Crawford Rd. By the 1860 Agricultural Census, John had acquired 900 acres of farm land. At various times he owned a store in Independence and a large mill on Hickahala Creek in conjunction with the Deans.

In addition to the five children buried in Dean-Crawford Cemetery, they had: Isaac Crawford - Killed 20 July 1864 in Atlanta during the Civil War. Burial place unknown.
