Civil war letter home

July 21, 1865 Memphis, Tennessee

Dear wife and children. It is with great pleasure that I take my pen in hand to inform you that I am well and hearty at present. Much hoping these few lines may find you all well and hearty. I can't think of much to write at present only I thank God for his blessing of his kindness and I hope you will be in the same notion, that you will trust in God for his blessings. Mother take good care of my three babies till I get home and then I will help you to take care of them.God bless their little hearts. Long to see them not only them but I want to see you all. Can't tell you half half how bad I want to see you all. You must excuse me for my bad writing, for I can't write to you without shedding tears nor I can't read a letter from you without shedding tears. God bless you all, my heart flows with love toward you children obey your mother your father and you will please God in so doing trust in God and he will bless you. James Naney you must trust in God or you will be miserable forever. James you must write to me as soon as this comes to hand and let me know how you are getting along in his world. Trust in God he is able to keep you from harm and danger. May the blessings of God rest on you forever. A few lines to Margaret God bless you my dear child I want to see you very much and (his??) grandfather wanted to see you and little James and Mary and Eliza. May God bless my dear babies. Mother I want you to not work too hard to make your self sick. Do what you can with out too much hard work but don't try too much mother you know what you have suffered be careful of yourself. Thomas my dear son I want you to be a good boy and if we never meet in this world I hope we will meet in a better world than this. Balinda (Malinda?), you and Queeny (Martha?) must both be good girls and learn to serve God and if we never meet in this world we may meet in heaven where we will never part again. I must close for this time yours truly as ever. John R. Creekmur to Mary Creekmur and children
