She was the daughter of George Crile and Jane Halle. She passed away in 2000. [1]
Joan Crile Foster, 62, of Shelburne died Feb. 16, 2000, owing to a brain tumor. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on June 10, 1937, the daughter of George Crile Jr., M.D. and Jane Halle Crile. She graduated from Laurel School in Cleveland in 1955 and Smith College in 1959. Following her graduation, she earned an M.A.T. from Harvard/Radcliffe in 1960. June 25, 1960, she married Roger S. Foster Jr., M.D., of Washington, D.C. The Fosters were joint owners of Halirock Kennels Reg. They bred, raised and trained Newfoundland dogs, having over 60 show and obedience champions. Joan was the Champlain Valley Union High School tennis coach from 1984 to 1989. She worked on the Shelburne Rescue Squad from 1989 to 1992 until moving to Atlanta, Ga. In Atlanta, she became a paramedic and worked on an inner city ambulance. In 1995, she was hired as a paramedic in the emergency room of Grady Memorial Hospital, where she worked until her diagnosis in June 1999. Shortly thereafter, the Fosters returned to Vermont. Joan was an enthusiastic wilderness white water canoer, running many of the toughest white water rivers in Canada with her husband. Joan is survived by her large, close family: her husband Roger S. Foster Jr., M.D., of Shelburne; their four children and their spouses; and eight grandchildren. These include Dr. Roger S. Foster III, Pamela Underhill and their children, Taylor and Madeleine of Alexandria, Va., Charles B. Foster, M.D., Ginny Brown Foster and their children, Grace and Timothy, of Silver Spring, Md., Elizabeth Crile Foster and Roger Hill and their children, Steven and Chuck of Middlebury and Halle Crile Foster Moore, M.D., and Austin Moore and their children, Helen and Alex of Cleveland, Ohio. Joan is also survived by her siblings, Ann Crile Esselstyn of Cleveland, Ohio, Susan Crile of New York, N.Y., and George Crile III of New York, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Vermont Cancer Center, University of Vermont, Burlington, Vt. 05401. A memorial service is to be held at a future date.
