Biography

"Johannes 'John' Greib/Gripe, Sr., was reportedly born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, between 1746 and 1749. He married Elizabeth Rench about 1770 in Maryland ... The Greibs started their family in Frederick County (likely the western portion that later became Washington County), Maryland, and then moved north to Bedford County Pennsylvania, in the mid-1770s. In the early 1780s they continued north into neighboring Huntingdon County and settled in Frankstown Township [where] John purchased 300 acres ... for £405 on October 13, 1787. ... The Greibs moved to western Ohio and settled in Montgomery County by 1804 with most of his siblings [where] they acquired ... about 155 acres ... before 1807. ... John Greib died on July 9, 1814, in Madison Township, Montgomery County, Ohio. He was in his late 60s. (Troy's Genealogue, 2012)

In his will dated 30 Dec 1811, John Kripe of Montgomery OH named as heirs his nine children Joseph Kripe, Elizabeth Kuns, Susanna Shively, John Kripe, Hester Ulry, Cathrine Ulry, Hannah Shivey, Barbara Ulry and Jacob Kripe, and his wife Elizabeth Kripe; he also appointed sons Joseph and John as executors. The will was probated 6 Sep 1814 at a ourt of Common Pleas held in Dayton, Montgomery OH. (Montgomery OH Wills, vol A pp 83-85; images 68-69)

Burial: Turner Cemetery, Montgomery County, Ohio, USA.

Find A Grave incorrectly includes Daniel Cripe (1772–1859) as one of John's sons. Daniel was more likely a son of John's brother Jacob (1746–1780).
