Biography

Dora was born in 1893. She was the daughter of William Perry Croley and Eliza Jane Bird. She passed away in 1981.[1]

Her grandson Stephen Broyles remembers:

"We used to travel down from central New York to visit her every other year or so. I remember trips in the late 1950's and early 60's. She lived alone in her house on US25W in Emlyn (Whitley County, Kentucky). It had indoor plumbing but there was also an outhouse out back that fascinated me, and a milk cow that had some grazing room defined by an electrified fence. The coal that was used to fire her kitchen stove was piled up out back behind the rear porch.
"The house is still there. It sits on a rise overlooking the highway. At 5 in the morning the train would rumble by, less than a hundred yards away, blowing its horn and shaking us awake for a few days until we got used to it.
"The house had a beautiful front porch and we'd sit out there in the evening, watch cars go by on the highway and catch fireflies. She did a lot of canning as evidenced by stacks of Mason jars in one of the rooms. We'd help her prep the vegetables for canning. She also made some wonderful patchwork quilts, one of which I got as a wedding present. There was a piano in the large kitchen and she used to teach the local kids."
