Obituary

IN MEMORIUM

The subject of this brief sketch, MRS. CATHARINE CRONK SPRING, beloved wife of MR. JARED S. SPRING, was born in the town of Victor, Ontario Co., and State of New York, in the year 1807, died at her own home in the town of Cannon, near the village of Rockford, Kent Co., State of Michigan, March 13th, 1883, being at the time of her death about 76 years of age.

Mr. and Mrs. Spring were married in Victor, New York, in September, 1828, and lived together nearly 55 years. They came to Michigan about 40 years ago, purchased their present home, then entirely new, and have lived on the same spot ever since.-- They were both members of the Methodist Church in Cannon, and have have been for more than 30 years, and lived consistent lives that were "read and known" by all who knew them.

Mrs. Spring was the mother of six sons, the eldest, MR. HENRY SPRING, of Grand Rapids, Mich., one of the oldest merchants in Kent county. The sons were all married and lived near "the old home," and with their wives were able to visit her in her last illness, and so far as possible help to alleviate her sufferings, which were at times very severe. Mrs. Spring lived much in the affections of her devoted husband and children, making an annual gathering for all the families, when around the family festive board they enjoyed together the good things that God had so graciously given them, and after the hopes of another year, and the "sweet good byes " were said, each went back to their own homes, to take up again the busy thread of life's work.

It was touchingly beautiful and sweet to see at the old home the husband and all the children stand in a circle around the elegant casket, arranging the flowers and drapery for the last dreamless sleep.

"Asleep in Jesus I oh how sweet, To be for such a slumber meet."

She was buried from the Methodist Church in Rockford, Mich., where after appropriate services were over, the remains were taken in charge by an organized company of old men. Mr. Spring was the oldest man in the society, nearly 80 years of age. There were none under 69. At their first organization they passed a resolution to attend in person, as far as possible, the funeral obsequies of each other and their wives.

The casket with its sacred trust, rest on the summit of the new cemetery at Rockford, overlooking the town below.

"God giveth His beloved sleep."
