Biography

Birth and Family

Joseph Crosby 9, (Joseph 8, Simon 7, Simon 6, Thomas 5, Anthony 4, Thomas 3, Miles 2, John 1) was born on 3 Sep 1692, in Billerica, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay. [1] Joseph was the son of Joseph Crosby and Sarah (French) Crosby.

Marriage

Joseph and Hannah (Maynard) Crosby were married on 21 Apr 1714, in Marlborough, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay.

Children

Joseph and Hannah began their life together in Joseph's hometown of Billerica, Massachusetts Bay. where they had:[2]

  • Benjamin, b. 15 Jun 1715, m. Abiah Roberts, had 11 children with her.
  • Hannah, b. 13 Nov 1716, apparently died 1736

Joseph and Hannah then removed to Worcester, where they had:[3]

  • Sarah Crosby, b. 05 May 1719; m. Isaac Miller, had 9 children
  • Joseph Crosby, b. 16 Aug 1731; m. Hannah Howe, they had 9 children
  • Catherine Crosby, b. 06 Nov 1733, m. Isaac Stearns, 7 Nov 1751[4] She died about 1754, after having one daughter.
  • perhaps as many as 5 others between 1721 and 1730, born and recorded elsewhere or born in Worcester but not recorded.

Death and Burial

Joseph died on 12 Apr 1744, in Worcester, Massachusetts Bay.

Probate

Joseph Crosby of Worcester, yeoman died intestate and on 30 April 1744, his widow Hannah was granted the administration of his estate.[5]

His inventory was taken on 11 May 1744 in Worcester.[6]

In 1746, an account of his estate by his widow Hannah was recorded which included cash received, debt paid, household goods to the widow, and administration fees.[7]

In 1746, James How of Worcester was appointed guardian of his granddaughter, Hannah How, aged 10 years. His wife Hannah was appointed guardian to his daughter Katherine Crosby, aged 13 years.[8]

In 1746, a second account by his widow, Hannah was recorded which included the balance from the previous account, the sale of land, debts paid, and administration fees. His estate was set out to his widow, Hannah, and his children, Benjamin Crosby who would pay the other heirs their share, viz., Sarah, wife of Isaac Miller, Joseph Crosby, Hannah[Catherine]Crosby, and the granddaughter of Joseph Crosby, Hannah How.[9]
