In the 1881 census there was a Joseph and Margaret Crosby living at 74 Long Row, Spital Tongues, Newcastle St Andrew. Joseph was a stoker in an oil factory. Also living in the house were their children Joseph, John, Francis and Jane.
By 1891, the Census shows the family living at 73 Long Row, Spital Tongues. The 43 year old Joseph is working as a Timber Yard Labourer with his 39 year old wife Margaret. Also living there at the time is 20 year old Plumber and Gas Fitter Joseph, 17 year old Cartman John, 14 year old Coal Miner Francis, 11 year old Jane, 8 year old James, 7 year old Thomas, 4 year old Alfred and 3 month old Mary Ann. Everyone is indicated as having been born in Longbenton, Northumberland.
