The following fall he was elected county clerk, and served one term. He moved to Ithaca early in 1859 to take up the duties of county clerk, living in Ithaca until his removal to Lafayette in 1873. While a resident of Ithaca he served as clerk and justice of the peace of Newark Township. Emery was a well-known and popular teacher, officiating in the St. Louis school in 1864. In 1863, at the age of 44, he enlisted in the Michigan 4th Cavalry Regiment for the Civil War, and mustered out October 26, 1864 in Jackson, Michigan. He was considered as a man above reproach in private life and as an official. Nancy died in 1872, and in 1877 Emery married Elizabeth. Emery died at the home of his son Virgil in Emerson Township at the age of 69. He belonged to the Christian Church, and was also an active member of the I.O.O.F. and of the Masonic order.[2]
