James first enlisted in 1st Company A, Salisbury Prison Guard in Salisbury on October 19, 1862. He was transferred to Company G (The Rough and Readys), 66th Regiment NC Troops on October 2, 1863. He was reported absent sick on October 31, 1863 and returned to duty in November-December 1863. He was reported present through April 30, 1864. He died at home in Davidson County in August 1864. The cause of death was not reported. [1]
