On the morning of 15 February 1952, Shirley took a .22 calibre rifle to go shooting crows near her house. Soon after, she was heard to cry out that she was shot. She was found by her mother with a gunshot wound to her stomach. Shirley was taken to Forbes District Hospital by taxi and ambulance but passed away before her arrival at the hospital. She was 16 years old. She is buried in the New Church of England portion of Forbes Cemetery, Forbes, New South Wales.[2][3][4]
