J. R. Crouch came to Mangum, Greer Co. (then part of Texas) in 1884. He "had been a professional hunter in former years, and one of those characters who are constantly seeking the frontier. " Crouch came with his family and camped in a tent in the southwest part of 'Tin Town,' which is now Mangum. (Tin Town was so-named for the store established there which was weather-stripped with the empty containers of various canned fruits popular with the cowboys from surrounding ranches.)
"Within a short time of his arrival, and before the cowboys knew he was in the country, he rode up on a round-up southeast of town. My father was in charge of the outfit and made himself acquainted and introduced all the cowboys. They gave Crouch a quarter of beef and father was invited, as were the other 'hands' to visit the camp. The next day my father visited the family and being greatly in need of a hair cut and shave, Crouch invited him to submit to his tonsorial skill. He was given a meal cooked by a woman and evidently it [was] so splendid that it was advertised extensively among the 'hands.' At any rate, shortly thereafter Crouch was in the hotel business and Mrs. [Ann Hutt] Crouch was the cook. They prospered and became an integral part of the social life of Old Greer." (Notes on History of Old Greer County, by Lem H. Tittle, 1942.)
