Biography

  • Winifred was born on 6 January 1899 in Suttontown, South Australia (just north of Mount Gambier proper) in the cadastral district of Grey[1] to Isabella (nee Hoglin) and William Crouch .[2]
  • Married John Henry Telford in 1927.[2]
  • Children with John Telford:
    1. Mavis Jean (b. 1927)
    2. Allan Wallace (b. 1929)
    3. Nancy Joy (b. 1930)
  • Unfortunately for poor Winifred the only solid mention I find of her in the local newspapers of the day is for a charge of public intoxication in January 1944, which wound up in the magistrates court. The court acknowledged that her state was probably partly caused by some medication she'd taken, which makes the guilty verdict seem somewhat cruel. Adding to the reader's confusion is the article switching between mention of two separate public houses at which her intoxication was supposed to have taken place: The Park Hotel and Mac's Hotel.[3]
  • Resided at Umpherston Street, Mount Gambier in 1952, according to news article about her daughter, Nancy's, wedding.[4]
  • Between 1950 and 1960 Winifred was hospitalised for about a year in an institution then known as Parkside Mental Hospital in Glenside, South Australia (see more).[5]
  • According to family memory, in approximately 1977 or 78 she and John visited family in the Mid North of the state.[6]
  • Died on 29 March 1984, aged 85,[7] and interred at Carinya Gardens Cemetery, Mount Gambier, South Australia.[8]

  3. IN THE COURTS. Border Watch (Mount Gambier, SA : 1861 - 1954) 4 January 1944: page 5. Retrieved 12 May 2017. Quote:
[...] Three inebriates, two men and a woman, who were apprehended during the past three days, were also fined. [...] Winifred Isabel Telford, of Mount Gambier, was the third offender. She pleaded not guilty, but after evidence was taken, a fine of 5/ with 9/6 costs was imposed. P.C. F. W. Inkley received a telephone message last night at 7.10 and went to Reidy Park, where he saw defendant lying under a tree. He said, "What are you doing here, Mrs. Telford?" Mrs. Telford replied-Where is my daughter, Vera? P.C. Inkley-Do you want a doctor? Mrs. Telford-No, I want my daughter. P.C. Inkley then went away and returned with Policewoman McGrath, who lifted defendant to her feet. Defendant smelt very strongly of liquor. Questioned by defendant, P.C. Inkley said that he found her at 7.10, lying on her back. She did not ask for Dr. Lorimer in his hearing. Miss C. C. McGrath, woman police constable, also gave evidence. With P.C. Inkley she went to Reidy Park, where, lying under an ornamental pine, was Mrs. Telford. Miss McGrath said. "What are you doing here?" Mrs. Telford did not answer. She was then assisted to her feet, but could not stand without support. Miss McGrath-You have been drinking. Mrs. Telford-Yes. At the Park Hotel. Defendant was almost carried over a low fence, placed in the sidecar, and taken to the police station. Questioned by defendant, Miss McGrath said that Mrs. Telford did say she had been drinking at the Park Hotel. Mrs. Telford gave evidence that she went to the pictures yesterday afternoon. She suffered from ear trouble, and halfway through the second half of the programme her ears were becoming so much worse. She took two tablets. She had had very little breakfast, and practically no dinner. She then left the theatre, and went around to Bay road, where she went to Mac's Hotel At Mac's she had one glass of stout on top of the tablets, and that was the only thing she could account for the police officer saying she was in toxicated. At the police station she asked to see a doctor, the reason being to ascertain whether the stout on top of the tablets would make her in the condition the police officers said. She could not remember P.C. Inkley or Miss McGrath asking if she wanted a doctor. In fining defendant 5/ with costs the Bench said that they believed the stout on top of the tablets probably had some reaction.

The skirt was gathered to a point at the waist with a lace panel down the front and the back merged into a long train. The sleeves were long and pointed over the hands, and a heart-shaped inset of lace filled in the low square neckline. A coronet of pearls and orange blossom held her embroidered net veil and she carried a shower bouquet of frangipanni. Mrs. B. L. McLean was matron of honour. Her mauve frock of satin back crepe had a coffee lace bodice and gored skirt. A mauve scalloped bolero was worn with it. Her mauve bonnet was trimmed at the back with pink flowers. She carried a basket of pink flowers. Mr. John Holmes was best man. Miss Margaret Crafter sang "Garden of Happiness." The Church was decorated with mauve, pink and white flowers by friends of the bride. Members of the family and close friends were entertained at a reception at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Telford.
