I believe he was not the son of Sarah Geary Crouch, because she lived in England and died there in 1749. A study by DeBrett's found it very likely, but unproven, that he was the son of a John Crouch who was deeded land in what is now King George Co., Va. in 1709. I do not know what the evidence is that connects that John Crouch with a John Crouch born in England. The fact that Joseph's widow was named Ann and his sons were John, James and Joseph is documented in his probate case and his sons' apprenticeship cases in Stafford Co., Va. court records. I do not think there is enough evidence to be very certain that Ann's last name was Reeds. Here is my web page about him from around 1996; which I got and edited from John Crouch of Gulfport, MS and/or Glenn Crouch, adding my own thoughts in brackets.
Husband: Joseph Crouch, d. 1742 King George Co., Va., a tutor or schoolmaster, probably son of John Crouch m. Wife: Ann [Reeds?], prob. a close relative of John Reeds of King George Co VA. Details: 07 Nov 1721 Joseph Crouch in King George Co VA. 07 Nov 1724 Joseph Crouch ordered to appear before the Grand Jury in King George Co VA. Document dtd 16 Apr 1729 , recorded 07 Nov 1729, shows Joseph & Ann Crouch leased 50 acres in King George Co VA from John Travis of Stafford Co VA. 05 Mar 1742 letters of administration granted to widow, Ann Crouch in King George Co VA. Joseph Crouch died intestate. Bondsman was Richard Elkins. 02 Apr 1742 inventory and appraisement of estate of Joseph Crouch was presented to the court. 03 Dec 1742 son, John Crouch apprenticed to Richard Elkins by order of the court. 05 Oct 1743 son, Joseph Crouch apprenticed to John Hellier (a cooper) by his mother, Ann Crouch. 01 Apr 1748 son, Joseph Crouch ae 16 was apprenticed again to John Elkins (a carpenter). 10/30 Nov 1757 son, James Crouch apprenticed by the court to James Stringfellow (a blacksmith) until age 21. Children: John Crouch, Joseph Crouch, and James Crouch (1) John Crouch Sr. b 1727 or 1730 Stafford Co VA or King George Co VA; d 1811 or 1815, Tazewell, Claiborne co TN; m (1) (after Apr 1750), (probably King George Co VA), widow, Sarah (Barbary) Weathers; m (2) 1791, Washington Co TN, widow, Elizabeth (Cloud) Lane. (2) Joseph Crouch b 12 Sep 1731, King George Co VA; . Joseph Crouch s/o Joseph & Ann Crouch. 05 Oct 1743 Joseph Crouch ae 12 apprenticed to John Hellier (a cooper) by his mother, Ann Crouch. 01 Apr 1748 Joseph Crouch ae 16 was apprenticed again to John Elkins (a carpenter). 24 Mar 1759 a Joseph Crouch is named as a legatee in the will of John Reeds of King George Co VA. The will was proved 06 Sep 1759. According to Mrs. L. M. Crouch, Jr., two Joseph Crouches were named, but according to DeBrett's researcher, James Crouch and only one Joseph Crouch were named. If only one Joseph Crouch was named, the Joseph Crouch named could be either [8] JOSEPH CROUCH or [10] JOSEPH CROUCH. The will named both the father of [10] JOSEPH CROUCH and the younger brother of [10] JOSEPH CROUCH as legatees. At the time the will was made, [8] JOSEPH CROUCH was 27 years old, free of his apprenticeship, and may have already moved away from King George Co VA. A Joseph Crouch appears in Montgomery Co VA in 1782 according to "Virginia Tax Payers 1782-87", supra. Based upon family tradition, that Joseph Crouch is believed to be [8] JOSEPH CROUCH. [But see my caveat below* -- John Howard Crouch] (3) James Crouch b 27 Apr 1741, King George Co VA; s/o Joseph & Ann Crouch. 10/30 Nov 1757 son, James Crouch apprenticed by the court to James Stringfellow (a blacksmith) until age 21. 24 Mar 1759 a James Crouch is named as a legatee in the will of John Reeds of King George Co VA. The will was proved 06 Sep 1759. John Crouch Jr. & Joseph Crouch were also named legatees in the will. At the time this will was made, [9] JAMES CROUCH was 17 years old and may have been living with his older brother [7] JOHN CROUCH and JOHN's family, which included [10] JOSEPH CROUCH and [12] JOHN CROUCH JR. According to "Prince William Co., VA Bond Books: 1753-1782", supra, p.4 indicates a bond posted by Jacob Crouch on 01 May 1769 as administrator for the estate of James Crouch, deceased. [9] JAMES CROUCH would have been 28 years old as of this time if he was the James Crouch, deceased. The fact that his wife was not named as administratrix suggests that he was not married at the time of his death.
