My grandmother Gertie made great pie. I watched her mix pie crust when I was twelve and was amazed. She mixed it right in her flour bin. She would scoop out a handful of lard from the lard can and drop it into the flour bin. Then she put her hand down into the flour bin and mixed it until it just felt right. Scooped it all out with both hands and dropped it onto her counter. The flour bin was perfectly clean and just had flour in it! I have never seen anyone else do it the same way since then and its been almost 50 years.
