Biography

Nathaniel, son of John Crow, was born say 1642 at Hartford, Conn., or possibly later based on birth of his first child.[1] He died on 30 Jul 1695 at East Hartford, Hartford County, CT.[1][2]

He married Deborah LEFFINGWELL, daughter of Lt Thomas LEFFINGWELL and Mary (surname unknown; not WHITE), circa 1684; children (surname CROW):[3]

  1. Elizabeth - b. 1685, d. before 6 Feb 1709/10; m. Daniel DICKINSON
  2. John - bp. 24 Jul 1687, d. before 6 Sep 1714; m1. Mehitable/Mabel KILBOURN; m2. Hannah —
  3. child - b. 20 Apr 1690, d. before 7 Sep 1695
  4. daughter - b. 13 Mar 1691/92, d. before 7 Sep 1695
  5. Deborah - b. 20 May 1694, d. after 30 Oct 1754; m. Samuel LOTHROP

He received a deed of gift dated 11 Feb 1683, Hartford, from his father John Crow for all John's land in the meadow on the east side of the Connecticut River.[4]

Nathaniel's inventory valued at £507-02-10 was taken 7 September, 1695 and widow Deborah (Leffingwell) Crow was appointed administratrix. Legatees: The relict Mrs. Deborah Crow, Elizabeth age 10 years, John Crow 8 years, Deborah 2 years & 3 months. Adms. to the widow, with Mr. William Pitkin & Deac. Olmsted to be overseers.[5][2]

The widow Deborah (Leffingwell) Crow married second, Andrew Warner, in 1696 in Norwich, Connecticut.[2]

Research Notes

Most of the birth dates of John Crow's children are estimates, and Nathaniel is usually listed fourth. However, based on known birth dates, ages at death, and marriage dates, their birth order is probably: Esther (d. 1700, age 72), John (d. 1667), Samuel (m. 1671), Elizabeth (b. 1644), Mary (m. 1666), Sarah (b. 1 Mar 1646/7), Hannah/Anna (b. 13 Jul 1649), Ruth (m1. 1671), Mehitable (d. 1730, age 78), Nathaniel (m. c1684), and Daniel (d. 1693, age 37).

If Nathaniel was born as early as 1634, he would have been over 50 when his first child was born in 1685. More likely his birth was between 1642 and 1656 which means his mother was John Crow's second wife Elizabeth Goodwin.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Nathaniel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Nathaniel:

Not sure I agree that Nathaniel's mother was a first unknown wife of John Crow. If Nathaniel was born as early as 1634, he would have been over 50 when his first child was born in 1685. More likely his birth was between 1642 and 1656 which means his mother was John Crow's second wife Elizabeth Goodwin. Does anyone have proven dates for these people?

The Great Migration Directory by Robert Charles Anderson, F.A.S.G., (2015), page 83, shows John Crow arriving in 1639, his first residence, Hartford.

I created a profile for John Crow's first wife, name unknown.

Here is her profile # if you want to replace Elizabeth Goodwin, m. John Crow about 1640 in Hartford. Unknown-439749

According to Robert Charles Anderson, John Crow was not in Hartford until 1639, and he married Elizabeth Goodwin about 1640, so Nathaniel's mother was probably the first (unknown) wife of John Crow, and Nathaniel was probably born in England.
