Biography

In the 1900 US Federal Census for Township 7 of the Choctaw Nation (Ft. Towson, Choctaw County, Oklahoma), we find Thomas Brown and his wife Francis and they both list their birth dates as unknown. Francis lists herself as born in Indian Territory as well as her parents. Their daughter is Ella born March, 1900 and she is listed as three months old born in Indian Territory.[1]

The Oklahoma Applications for Allotment, Five Civilized Tribes shows the allotment of land to Francis Brown, Choctaw Roll by Blood No. 4222. In the application, dated 3 November 1903, Francis states she is a resident of Crowder which was located in Tobucksy County, Choctaw Nation in the Indian Territory later known as Pittsburg County. She received a total of 305.5 acres with an appraised value of $1023.92.[2]

In the 1910 US Federal Census, Francis Brown age 29 and her husband John T. Brown age 43 are living in Hunter, Choctaw County, Oklahoma. The children listed are Ella M. age ten, Horace age seven, Ollie D. age five, Howard J. age two and Norman age 11 months. All these children show Oklahoma as their place of birth. John T. Brown is listed as White and the rest of the family are listed as Indians.[3]
