In the 1870 Federal Census, Marcus was a 7 month old infant in the Mitchell County, North Carolina household of his parents and siblings[1].
Sadly, Marcus' mother Julia passed away when Marcus was about 4 years old, in 1873[3]. In the 1880 Federal Census, Marcus lived with his widowed father and two siblings in Mitchell County, North Carolina[4].
On 17 September 1890 Marcus married Lockie Ellender Gouge in Mitchell County, North Carolina[5]. Lockie was born 27 October 1871 in Mitchell County, North Carolina to Tom Gouge and Ester Winter[6].
In the 1900 Federal Census, Marcus and Lockie lived in Carter County, Tennessee with four of their children[7]. Marcus worked in a sawmill[7].
In the 1910 Federal Census, Marcus and Lockie continued living in Carter County, Tennessee[8]. All six of their surviving children were also in the household, and Marcus continued working in the lumber industry[8].
Marcus was about 49 years old when his wife Lockie passed away in 1919[6]. Marcus and Lockie had ten children together, but only six survived[9]:
In the 1920 Federal Census, Marcus was widowed and lived with his two youngest daughters in Washington County, Tennessee[16]. Marcus worked as a manager of a saw mill[16]. His oldest son, Henry Grady, lived next door with his own family[17].
Sometime after the 1920 Federal Census Marcus married Mary Griffith (see research note). Unfortunately Mary would pass away in 1922 after at most two years of marriage[18]. Marcus and Mary had one child together:
After the death of his second wife, Marcus married a third time[20] (see research note).
Marcus was 56 years old when he passed away from complications of an infected wound from barbed wire[2]. He died on 24 August 1926 in Johnson City, Washington, Tennessee[2] and is buried in Gouge Cemetery located in Mitchell County, North Carolina[21].
