Biography

Yelverton Crowell immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Yelverton Crowell was one of the sons of the founder of this family on Cape Cod.

Yelverton Crowell was born to John Crowell and Elishua UNKNOWN about 1616 in England.[1]

Anderson is clear that Yelverton had both a father and a brother named John. The confusion seems to be with their death dates. Many believe John (who died in Yarmouth Massachusetts Bay Colony on 7 Jan 1673) was Yelverton's brother.

Yelverton Crowe said to have been a resident of Charlestown in 1637.[2]

Yelverton Crowell settled in the town of Yarmouth in 1640. He owned land in West Yarmouth where the name Crowell is still found on land records.

Marriage

He married Elizabeth, who's maiden name has not been proven, about 1642 in Yarmouth.[1]

Children:

  1. Thomas Crowell, born 9 May 1649, Yarmouth, Plymouth Colony, died 22 April 1723, Yarmouth, Barnstable County, Massachusetts Bay
  2. John Crowell, born 1642, Yarmouth, Barnstable, Ma.
  3. Edward Crowell, born 1644. died Woodbridge, New Jersey, 1688; married 16 January 1673, Mary Lathrop
  4. Samuel Crowell, born 1646.
  5. Elizabeth Crowell, born 9 May 1649.
  6. Yelverton Crowell.
  7. Elishua Crowell.
  8. Mary Crowell.
Note: For disputed child, Susannah (Crowell) Berry (1655-1747) see Research Notes.

Death

Yelverton died "suddenly" 24 October 1683[3] in West Yarmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts Bay Colony.

His will is dated 23 Dec 1681 and was proved 8 Mar 1683/4:[4][5]

Research Notes

  • A previous version of this profile associated a daughter Susannah (Crowell) Berry (1655-1747) of Yarmouth, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, with Yelverton Crowell. At about the same time, an Elizabeth Hammond was linked as Yelverton's wife and the mother of this Susannah. Reliable sources and analysis were not shown to support these associations; Susannah was severed as a daughter and Elizabeth was severed as a wife.
  • Since the SS Caledonia was a passenger ship in the late 1800's and early 1900's, it is safe to say that the did NOT come to New England 1634 on the "Caledonia".[citation needed]

This person immigrated to New England between 1621-1640 as a Minor Child (under age 21 at time of immigration) of a Puritan Great Migration immigrant who is profiled in Robert Charles Anderson's Great Migration Directory (or is otherwise accepted by the Puritan Great Migration (PGM) Project).

There seems to be some possibility that John Crowell may have had 2 wives and that Elishua was the wife that he met & married in New England while Wife #1 is Unknown and was buried in England around 1625 from complications associated with childbirth.

Thus, I have put Uncertain on the mother for this profile.

Susannah (Crowell) Berry (1655-1747) was recently linked as a daughter of this Yelverton Crowell. A wife, Elizabeth Hammond, was added at the same time.

These links were made without citing reliable sources and without collaboration.

While I may have overlooked something, I did not see a daughter Susannah mentioned in Yelverton's will. No daughter Susanna appears on Yelverton's child list. In my brief overview, I did not see a wife's name Hammond or Hammonds associated with Yelverton.

I plan to sever these associations after adding disputed associations sections to the three profile involved.--Gene

Can we get a definitive source for both his origins/parents and the maiden name of his wife, please? Thanks.

Everything is found in The Great Migration, Volume II. I'm surprised that neither he nor his father have this listed as a source. I'll get to work and clean up the profiles. My brother-in-law is related to 3 of his sons.

Thanks, A.P. Much appreciated. While the project has made great progress on many PGM era profiles we still have a long way to go. Your help is appreciated.
