Biography

According to Wm. Callahan - John "O'Crowley" emigrated from Ireland about 1830, 1831. He died in a cholera epidemic in 1848. His brother Daniel Crowley, took over financial responsibility for John's two daughters. John's wife Mary returned to Ireland.

According to the handwritten family tree of Ruth Harkins, John Crowley owned the General Store in East Boston.

According to Family Tree of William S. Callanan http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.crowley/347.1/mb.ashx:

John Crowley emigrated to USA from Ireland ca.1820's or early 1830's and his wife Mary O'Connor settled in East Boston. They were married in 1830's by Father Fitton. They had a daughter Margaret Maria Crowley (born ca. 1839) and another daughter (Catherine??? name presently unknown). John Crowley died in 1840's. His brother Daniel Crowley (wife also named Mary) paid for Margaret (his niece) to attend Villa Maria Academy in Montreal for four years during the 1850's. Margaret Maria Crowley married Cornelius Patrick Harkins (ca.1835-1903) of Newton, Massachusetts in 1860. They had seven children,of whom the third Mary Grace Harkins (1865-1954).

It appears that Daniel Crowley was successful financially but did not have any surviving children. He shared his generosity with his brother's children.

Daniel Crowley and John Crowley are both mentioned in William H. Sumner's "History of East Boston", published 1858. One reference, as follows: "The horses and carriages were sold to Major Barton and Daniel Crowley, familiarly known as "King Crowley," and who now, by his well directed energy, acquisition of property, and acknowledged supremacy over so many residents of the Island, better deserves the title than when it was first conferred upon him." page 509

Daniel O'Crowley and his brother John (surnames subsequently shortened to Crowley) emigrated to Boston in early 1830's. Daniel (known as "King Crowley")married Mary Colman and they had one son, John Aloysius Colman Crowley, who was probably the first Irish- American to graduate from Harvard College (Class of 1852). He was successful in business and was somewhat of a civic and philanthropic figure among the Irish community in Boston ("High Irish") His brother John married a Mary O'Connor (also an emigrant) in East Boston between 1833 and 1837. They were married by a Father Fitton. They had two daughters (and perhaps some sons), Margaret Maria Crowley born ca. 1839 and Catherine born ca.1842. John died in 1849 and Daniel Crowley apparently became guardian for his nieces. He paid for Margaret Maria's education at Villa Maria convent school in Montreal for aproximately four or five years in the mid to late 1850's. Margaret Maria Crowley was married to Cornelius Patrick Harkins (a successful business executive at S.S.White Dental Supplies) in 1860. They settled in Newton and had seven children. Her second daughter Mary Grace Harkins (1865-1954) married Sampson A. Callanan,

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
