Little is really known about him. It is known that he was born in circa 1755 in the Western half of Halifax Co VA that became Pittsylvania Co VA.
He was of an age that he most certainly participated in some way in the American Revolution. It is possible and records do exist that a William Crump from Virginia was a member of the Clark's Illinois Regiment of Virginia Volunteers [1]that traverse west during the American Revolution to be "Rangers" on the frontier in what is now SE Illinois and into Cape Girardeau Co Missouri. This area is where several of his children passed through during their lives and one sons' family eventually did settle in Cape Girardeau Co Missouri.
He died before the 1790 census most likely in South Carolina.
His wife, Ruth is the head of household on the 1790 census in Abbeville, South Carolina [2]with 2 males over 16 and 3 males under 16 and 3 females living in the household. These would be 3 unidentified male children, son Robert Crump born c. 1777, William Crump born c. 1781, daughter Ruth Crump born c. 1785, and son John Pinckney Crump born c. 1786, and daughter Frances Crump born c. 1789. All of the NAMED children are mentioned in the probate of last daughter Frances CRUMP Neal Schrader. [3]
