Research Notes
In 2016, frankcrumpmiller wrote on Ancestry.com:
Move to Texas - In 1851, a friend of John's named Dem Mayfield was in Pikeville, the county seat of Marion County, Alabama, where he was accosted by three men and beaten very badly. He returned home and, accompanied by John, returned to Pikville where one of the men was found. In the ensuing fight, the man was killed. John and Demp fled to Texas to avoid prosecution. This was related to me by my grandfather, William Murray Crump, who was John's nephew. I also have a letter written in May, 1863, from John to his father, William Crump, Stating he was passing through Mobile, Alabama, on his way to Richmond, Virginia. He said he would be back through Mobile in about two weeks. The letter did not say why he was going to Richmond.
