Biography

Nancy Jane Culp was born at Jefferson, Ohio, 22 Nov 1832, daughter of Adam Culp and Nancy Wright and died at Tuscarawas, Tuscarawas, Ohio, 25 Jul 1860.

Nancy concieved a child likely at Jefferson, Ohio, about October 1848 with Unknown Watt. DNA evidence suggests he is related to Charles Watt and Jane Paisley, possibly a son. [see Research Notes below]. [Note: Charles and Jane Watt son, Joseph Watt, died young but lived long enough to be a potential candidate for the father. He serves as a better stand in than their son James until this mystery can be resolved]

The child of Nancy and Unknown Watt was:

  1. Alonzo Culp

Nancy married 2nd at Jefferson, Ohio, 9 Mar 1854, the Reverend Peter Grove Saltzman born at Jefferson, Ohio, 16 Jun 1824 and died at Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, 21 Feb 1910, son of Andrew Saltzman and Catherine Hartman.

The children of Nancy and Peter were:

  1. Nancy Saltzman
  2. Anderson Saltzman

Nancy appears to have been a named after her mother.

A week before Nancy's 4th birthday, her mother died from septic poisoning after giving birth to brother Benjamin. [1] Her father remarried shortly thereafter, requiring Nancy and her young siblings to adjust to a new mother.

Nancy lived a short and difficult life. Pregnant at age 15, she gave birth to her first child, Alonzo on 15 July 1849.[2] His father is unknown but tantalizing hints suggest a possible James Watt (see Research Notes). Having taken his mother's surname, he appears in the 1860 Census as a son of Nancy's father, Adam Culp.[3]. Whereas, Nancy appears separately in the 1860 Census, now married to the Reverend Peter Grove Saltzman. It appears that Alonzo was raised in Yellow Creek, Ohio with his mother's younger siblings on her father's farm.

Curiously, Alonzo, born in 1849, does not appear in the 1850 Census where Nancy is found living with her father and siblings. At the age of 21, Nancy married the Reverend Peter Grove Saltzman on 9 Mar 1854.

Soon thereafter, she gave birth to a son, Andrew and a daughter, Nancy. Sources conflict on exactly when they were born and died, however it is known that they died young having lived sometime between 1854 and 1860. [citation needed] Neither appear in the 1860 Census with their parents. . Nancy was just 27 years old when she died, having lived long enough to be enumerated in the 1860 United States Census taken on 3 July.

Nancy was buried at Crooked Run Methodist Church where a modest monument was erected on her behalf.

Her husband, would remarry and raise 6 new children with his second wife.

  • Kathleen Gloria (Culp) Plasky, (Aunt of Michael Stills, Researcher), indicated on a family tree that the father of Alonzo Culp may have had the surname Watt, she put this surname on a family tree for her grandson. However, she did not indicate where she obtained this information and she has since passed away in 2006 before this question could be asked.
  • According to Barbara Boyle, a researcher for bakerrussell/RobertVBaker on Ancestry.com, they have also indicated that the surname was Watt. However, she obtained this information from her client and does not have any source info either. This researcher's information indicated that a James Watt was the father.
Response from bakerrussell:
I found the name of James Watt in some while doing some research: Nancy Jane Culp Born November 22, 1832 in Jefferson, Ohio, United States Daughter of Adam Culp and Nancy Wright Sister of Jacob Wright Culp, George Burr Culp, Samuel Edwin Culp, Margaret Culp, William Edwin Culp, Adam Miles Culp, Benjamin Harrison Culp, Amos A Culp, Catherine Culp, Mary Ann Culp, John L Culp, Elizabeth Culp, Amos B Culp and Albert Tell Culp Wife of Unknown James? Watt — married [date unknown] [location unknown] Wife of Peter Grove Salesman — married March 9, 1854 in Jefferson, Ohio, United States Mother of Anderson Saltzman, Nancy Salesman and Alonzo M. Culp Died July 25, 1860 in Tuscarawas, Tuscarawas, Ohio, United States
  • No marriage has been found or indicated in any known research. Alonzo was born 15 July 1849, thus, he was conceived around 15 October 1848, making Nancy just 4 months shy of her 16th birthday.
