Biography

Jackie was his nickname as a child and teenager. His middle name is uncertain in its spelling. Even he couldn't say how to spell it with certainty. It was properly pronounced like "Denton," though.

Jack was born in 1926 in or around Trumann in Poinsett County, Arkansas. There is some chance that he was born in Poinsett County, but outside city limits, or even in neighboring Craighead County. As a child, Jack and his family were essentially cotton picking sharecroppers in or around Trumann. Sometime between 1935 and 1940, the family moved to north St. Louis County, where his father found work first as a general laborer, and then at the local cement plant.

Jack worked as a clerk at Shenberg Market in St. Louis as a young man, and joined the Missouri National Guard. During his tour of duty, he achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant, and served as his company's mess sergeant. He was discharged for chronic bronchitis early in his second period of enlistment. Jack worked as a door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesman as an adult, before settling in as a letter carrier for the postal service for approximately 35 years.

Jack enjoyed big band era music, as well as some 1950s era rock and roll and popular music, as well as country. He was a particular fan of Jim Reeves and Hank Williams, Sr. He was a very successful local amateur fast-pitch softball pitcher, having once thrown a no-hitter, and also coached his son's little leage baseball team for at least one year.

Jack graduated from Riverview Gardens High School in north St. Louis county, where he lettered in Oratory and Debate. He was also known to sing, and would describe himself as an "irish tenor." Among his favorite songs was the irish standard, "Oh Danny Boy." He also played trumpet (or possibly trombone...not sure off the top of my head). He loved telling stories- often involving mice and leprechauns- especially to children. He was an avid reader, often coming home with a whole box of books and trading them in at the library after reading them all in a week's time. He also liked to spend time on his model village "Culpville."

He passed away in 2007. [1]
