Biography

Cassandra CULVER was the daughter of Henry CULVER, Jr. Cassandra married Francis Ignatius COOMES possibly of Maryland or Virginia. According to Sister Mary Donnally's “Imprints”, Bennett COOMES and Francis Ignatius [sic] COOMES (sons of Thomas and Elizabeth WHARTON COOMES of Charles Co, MD) had married, respectively, sisters Drusilla and Cassandra CULVER, d/o Henry CULVER, Jr. of Prince Georges.

Bennett COOMES died before 1767, and Francis Ignatius COOMES apparently purchased Bennett and Drusilla CULVER COOMES' share of her father's estate (1/5 interest in the tract, Pitchcroft). Sister Donnally states further that the above transaction from Francis Ignatius COOME [sic] and wife to James HAMBLETON [sic] was dated 12 Nov 1767, and that “James HAMILTON purchased “Pinchcroft” [sic] from his brother-in-law Francis Ignatius COOMBES and his wife Cassandra." [1]

The children of Francis Ignatius Coomes by his first marriage are thought to be:

1) Drusilla COOMES, born around 1765, married Benedict JARBOE in Hardy County, West Virginia.
2) Elizabeth Combs (Coomes) also born around 1765, married James BEAN, originally from Hagerstown, Maryland. They lived in Hardy County, West Virginia, raised a family, and died there.
3) Francis Ignatius COOMES, Jr. born October 28, 1767, in Charles County, Maryland. Francis Jr. married Sarah Stewart STUART LEWIS (widow of William LEWIS in 1794.

Cassandra was born in 1740. Cassandra Culver ... She passed away in 1800.[2]

Please note: I have found no birth, marriage, or death records for Cassandra CULVER COMBS. I believe that she was married to a Francis Ignatius Combs, Sr. who died in 1816 in Hardy, West Virginia. A different Francis Ignatius Coomes, Sr. was born in 1726 and died in Fairfield, Nelson County, Kentucky in 1822. These two are often confused.
