Notes
Note N25Link was a WWI veteran and was a corporal in Motor Company #12 - Hospital Corp. He enlisted on 4/26/1918 in Boone, NC and was discharged 5/251919 from Camp Lee, GA. It is believed he was exposed to Mustard Gas somewhere in France.

Link was born near Banner Elk (Balm), NC. He was working as a farmer (hired man) near Malad City, Oneida County, ID in 1917 when he registered as "Link Culver" for the Civilian Draft. He listed his home address at that time as Forest Grove, NC (near North Fork and Beaver Dams). Link's father, James Oscar had bought a farm in Forest Grove sometime around 1900. I could not find his family in a 1890 or 1900 census to establish residency for those years.
1
James Oscar bought a mill near Mabel, NC sometime around 1918 and bought a farm bordering his son Joe's farm in Little Milligan, TN sometime before 1920. James sold his mill to Niley Monroe Church and moved to TN. Link moved to Little Milligan with his parents sometime after his WWI service ended. He was in James Oscar's household in Little Milligan in January 1920 when the census was taken and was married later that same month. He and Thelma Ruth moved to Winona, WV in late 1920early 1921 and their son Thomas Lincoln Jr was born there in September 1921. They returned to TN/NC sometime after 1921 because of Link's health. Link was in and out of the Soldiers Home VA Hospital in Johnson City, TN from 2/28/1924-6/20/1925, 12/19/1928-10/15/1930 and 10/27/1933-2/81934. Thelma Ruth died in September 1928 at age 28 of complications of tuberculosis and asthma and Link died in January 1947 at age 51 of complications of tuberculosis.
1
Link's name may have been Thomas Lincoln. However, according to his sister Cessie (as told to T. Culver III & T Culver, Jr.) his name was "Link Loui" and was recorded that way in her family bible. He was listed as "Link L" in the 1910 census when he was 15. His military records show him as Link Culver and he went by Link all his life. Link was recorded in all census records. To our knowledge he never used the name Loui. He did use T.L. Culver on many documents, especially during the 1930s. He signed his name as "TL Culver" on checks and other documents. He and Thelma Ruth also named their son Thomas Lincoln Culver, Jr. T.L. Culver is on Link and Thelma Ruth's cemetery foot stones.
