Margaret Cumming was born in 1869 at Gobur, Victoria, Australia. She married John Owen Jones (at Gobur) in 1897^[1] and, together, they established their home at Spring Creek, near Fawcett, Victoria and raised five children. In early 1916, the couple separated: John Owen moving to New Zealand and Margaret Downey and the children moving to Melbourne. They lived firstly at 16 Page Street, Albert Park and then Middle Park, where the children completed their schooling. Margaret passed away on January 17, 1948^[2] at the home of her third child, Christina Doris (Knowles). ^[3][4]

Note: DOUNIE/DOWNIE/DOWNEY

Margaret's grandmother's maiden name was DOUNIE or DOWNIE. The family name most probably emanates from North Eastern Scotland from the old Barony of Douny or Downie in Angus, Aberdeenshire. Over the last 2 centuries, the DOUNIE/DOWNIE/DOWNEY name has been the second given name of numerous descendants of the Cumming, Allsop and Jones families - in most, if not all, cases being spelled DOWNEY.

Certainly, in Margaret (Cumming) Jones' case, her second name was spelled DOWNEY, as confirmed by both her Birth Certificate^[5] and her Marriage Certificate.^[6]
