My grandfather John Anner Cunningham was born between 1857-1859 in Newport, Jackson County, Arkansas and died in October 1934 in Sand Springs, Tulsa County, Oklahoma, according to his obituary. His brother was George Washington Cunningham and their sister was Alice or Fannie (perhaps, short for Frances). Oral family history says that the three were virtual orphans of the Civil War with their father "perishing" in the war, perhaps at the Battle of Pea Ridge in Arkansas.
Their mother remarried before the war ended and then she died leaving the three children with a stepfather. The sister was given to a family that was traveling through Arkansas and not clear on who raised the boys. The boys were separated for a time and then reunited in Little Rock when John was around 21. John and George and their families remained close until John's death in 1934.
Not sure if Cunningham is a biological or adopted name because of the lack of DNA matches with people of the same name. On the other hand, on Family Tree DNA, there are many matches at the 25, 37, 67, and 111 marker levels and no Cunningham. There are 8 matches with other Cunninghams at the 12 marker level.
John was first married to Nancy Mariah "Nannie" Grigsby Hutchison Cunningham in November 1884 in Lawrence County, Arkansas. They had one daughter Clara Latha Cunningham Nelson Deberry (Mrs. John Henry Deberry) 1885-1916. John didn't marry my grandmother to be, Rosa Matthews Hays Cunningham until September 1898 in Ardmore, Indian Territory. John and Rosa had four children, given names as follows: Otis Kendall (1900-1950); Hubert Charles (1903-1968); Ruby May (1905-1975); and my father Marion Wilshire who later changed his name to William Marion (1908-1978).
