Phoebe (Curtis) Horton lived in Takaka, Tasman, New Zealand.

Phoebe was the daughter of Ann and George Curtis, Labourer of Oxhill.

She was baptised on January 9 1825 at Oxhill, Warwickshire.

Phoebe Curtis aged 17 married on 10 May 1841 at the church in Oxhill to John Hortin , 27 year old Agricultural Labourer.

On the night of the 1841 Census (June 6) she is visiting her father and siblings.

The following year she and John boarded the ship Thomas Harrison bound for New Zealand travelling under the assisted immigrant scheme. Phoebe was 18 and john 32.

Phoebe gave birth on the ship to their first child, Ann Maria who was to die just 12 years later in 1854.

On arrival they settled at Motueka where Phoebe was the first woman to teach English to the local Maori.

They moved later to Motupipi where John took on work at Brownlee's Mill. Ten more children followed in Phoebe's new home at Motupipi where she remained until her death in 1903.

Phoebe was 78 and is buried at Clifton cemetery, Takaka.

Phoebe Horton's name is recorded on the Takaka Pioneer's Memorial being among the first early settlers to the district. LOCATION NOT RECORDED.
